Creating Grassroots Wi-Fi Mesh Network for Downtown Raleigh
Instead of the local government creating a Wi-Fi network with taxpayer dollars, why don't we create a community-sponsored Wi-Fi network? Similar networks have been created in San Francisco (http://sf.meraki.com/map) and even Wilmington, NC is starting one. Benefits could include a lower costs to operate, better coverage, less restrictions and more community based content!

We're interested in a more community driven approach versus the state, local and other municapalities attempting the effort.

Assuming you aren't attempting a sales pitch for Meraki... I'd suggest that "grassroots" would be better served using Open-Mesh http://www.open-mesh.com/ or other open alternatives with a host of device options as opposed to a corporation like Meraki. The larger issue will be to find an accepting Internet provider for egress since there are typically TOS/AUP concerns to mitigate when dealing with incumbent big money providers (Hi local carrier class IP provider folks reading this --- please step up if you want your -network- service to be highlighted as a different animal)

This will only add to our downtown revitalization. Attracting conferences to the center will be a breeze with MESH!

Great note. Raleigh is spending $$100,000 on equipment and support when and proven options that are cheaper for MESH WIFI
